Professor John L. Terry, III

John currently holds a 5th Dan ranking in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate, 1st Dan in Shiho Karano Ryu Ju-Jitsu, and is a Krav Maga and Combat Shooting Instructor.  He  was honored in 2011 with his Menkyo (Professorship) in Self-Defense Studies by the Nippon Martial Arts Renmei and recevied an Honorary Instructor certification in the IMB Academy under Grandmaster Richard Bustillo as a second generation JKD instructor under Bruce Lee in 2016.

He co-founded River Valley Martial Arts in Russellville AR in 2002 and was one of the chief instructors until 2010 when he relocated to Hot Springs AR.  He is also a certified self-defense instructor, specializing in children’s and women’s self defense tactics, a personal trainer and a youth fitness instructor.  

John is the founder of the Fighting Back Institute and serves as the Executive Director of Kid-Safe Communities, a not-for-profit foundation focused on educating parents and children to the tactics used by predators to lure and harm children, as well as addressing such important issues as bullying, cyberbullying, Internet safety and more.  He is a passionate speaker on youth safety issues, and speaks regularly to school, civic, church and community groups on a variety of safety topics.  

John also speaks to women’s groups on rape and assault prevention, and oversees the not-for-profit Women-Safe Communities project.  He helps martial arts schools incorporate both Kid-Safe and Women-Safe curriculums into their programs.   John is a 2008 inductee into the US Martial Arts Hall of Fame and a 2016 Master’s Hall of Fame inductee for his Kid-Safe  and Women-Safe advocacy work.

John works with martial arts schools to help with marketing and retention, as well as administration, budgeting, curriculum development and fundraising.  He teaches communication skills to instructors to help customize teaching based on the learning style of the students to enhance results and improve retention.

He is the founder of, a web design and hosting company for martial arts schools, fitness centers, and general business.  KarateWebistes also assists school owners effectively brand themselves in their local community, as well as with the development of sales and marketing materials (such as business cards, brochures, flyers, posters, calendars, mouse pads, pens, and more...).  Proceeds from KarateWebsites.Net go to support the not-for-profit activities of the Fighting Back Institute’s Kid-Safe and Women-Safe initiatives.

John inherited the leadership of the International Martial Arts Council of America and United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame from Professor Marty Cale at the 2016 United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame induction banquet in Addison TX.
